“This is Space Between Two People Having Sex (2008), a sculpture by German artist Asta Gröting, who covered two actors in plaster during the moment of copulation and then, as it were, conceptually turned them inside out. What was left was the void between them, a trace of an intimate yet ephemeral moment. Redolent with compressed meaning, this negative space carries the weight of all that is unexpressed, inexpressible and hidden within human relationships, reminding us that however close we appear emotionally or physically to another person, we are essentially alone.” – B.D. 20 March 2009  |
